Francesco Salicini, better known as Once Were Nerd, has shared an update on his legal situation and announced the creation of a backup YouTube channel. The Italian YouTuber is under investigation for reviewing retro handheld consoles that often come with preloaded ROMs, a potential copyright infringement.

In his latest video, Salicini explained that Italian financial authorities searched his home and office, seizing around 30 handheld devices and his smartphone, which was only returned after two months. He stated that he fully cooperated with the investigation, providing chat logs, documents, and correspondence with manufacturers.

Although no formal charges have been made yet, authorities have already requested the removal of his online presence, including his YouTube channel, website, Discord, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, and Telegram. His website is already inaccessible for many users in Italy.

As a precaution, Salicini removed all videos featuring ANBERNIC devices and launched a new YouTube channel in case his original one is shut down. His main channel holds nearly 50,000 subscribers and over 220 videos, making the potential loss significant.

The retro gaming community has shown strong support, pointing out that many international creators continue to review similar devices without legal repercussions. Still, Salicini emphasized that he must now speak cautiously, as anything he says could be used against him in court.

The case is still in its early stages, and it may take months before it’s decided whether to proceed with prosecution or close the investigation. Meanwhile, Salicini remains committed to continuing his work and staying connected to his followers.
